Prof. Hassan Al-Nomani, President of Sohag University, witnessed part of the activities celebrating World Environment Day, which was organized by Faculty of Graduate Studies and Environmental Research in cooperation with the University’s Center of Sustainable Development, and approved by the United Nations Program to be on June 5 of each year, where the University President participated in planting some fruit trees in the wide areas surrounding faculty of Education building in the new university campus, accompanied by Prof. Abdel Nasser Yassin, Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, Prof. Khaled Omran, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and Prof. Hamdy Hassanein, Dean of faculty of Graduate Studies and Director of the Center of Sustainable Development. Dr. Abdel Aleem Saad, coordinator of the initiative, and Dr. Yasser Abdel Fattah, Director General of Administrative Affairs.
The university president pointed out that the celebration of World Environment Day this year comes under the title “Restoring lands, combating desertification, and enhancing the ability to adapt to drought,” and raising the slogan (Our land is our future… together we restore our planet), adding that the world’s eyes are currently turning towards increasing environmental awareness and green transformation by adopting sustainable, environmentally friendly practices that contribute to combating climate change, improving the quality of life and preserving biodiversity
This is in accordance with the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050, and in implementation of the directives of the political leadership, led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, who launched the “100 Million Trees” planting initiative, through which the state seeks to establish a culture of smart and sustainable agriculture, and to reclaim desert lands, in order to Preserving the environment and increasing green cover areas.
Dr. Khaled Omran said that in conjunction with the celebration of World Environment Day, the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector organizes many distinguished social and cultural events and activities, which aim to enhance societal responsibility to preserve the environment, and spread awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources and rationalizing their consumption, explaining that the celebration of the university’s World Environment Day contributes to supporting environmental and climate issues, as it highlights the most important problems that the environment suffers from in light of the increase in carbon emissions, rising temperatures, and successive climate changes, stressing that the university administration is making unremitting efforts to preserve the environment and spread awareness among its employees of the importance of preservation on its natural resources,
From his part, Dr. Hamdy Hassanein said that the University’s Center of Sustainable Development is keen to celebrate World Environment Day annually. This year, in cooperation with the faculty of Graduate Studies and Environmental Research, the Center organized an afforestation event to plant fruit trees in the new university campus, within the framework of completing the implementation of the presidential initiative 100 million trees, to restore lands that lost their production due to the impact of climate change, and to reclaim desert lands and turn them into green gardens that contribute to reducing emissions and eliminating air pollution and also reduce the negative impact of climate change, in order to contribute strongly to achieving the sustainable development goals and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
